Program Description
The Early Identification Program (EIP) is a cooperative venture between The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the following colleges and universities: The University of Rhode Island, Providence College, and Rhode Island College. This program provides selected high-achieving students at these undergraduate schools early provisional admission to the medical school following the student's graduation. The purpose of the RI EIP program is to increase the opportunities for a career in medicine to residents of the state of Rhode Island.
If selected for early assurance through the EIP, students are eligible to participate in professional development activities with their future medical school classmates in the Brown University Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME).
Eligibility
Rhode Island residents* currently enrolled in the junior year at Providence College, Rhode Island College, or the University of Rhode Island are eligible to be considered for the Early Identification Program. All applicants to the program must be U.S. citizens.
* An individual is considered a Rhode Island resident if he/she graduated from a Rhode Island high school AND if the individual’s parent(s)** have lived in Rhode Island for the previous two calendar years, as documented by federal tax returns.
**The student is dependent, i.e., living with the parent(s) when not in school and claimed as a dependent on prior two years’ federal tax returns. Students who are independent i.e., not living with parents and filing individual tax returns for the previous two years, must have at least one parent residing in RI for the previous two years, as documented by federal tax returns.
Admissions Process
Students interested in the EIP should notify the premedical advisor at their undergraduate college of their interest shortly prior to their fifth semester. Premedical advisors may require students to express interest at an earlier date, so students should inquire about deadlines at their own school.
Students offered provisional admission through the Early Identification Program are selected from institutional nominees to the program. Each institution, through its premedical advisors or premedical committee, may nominate up to four students.
Candidates are selected based on a currently demonstrated readiness to take on the rigours of medical education, as determined by the MD Admissions Committee. EIP applicants not selected to participate through this early identification process are welcome and encouraged to apply through the standard AMCAS process.
For this route of entry, the MD Admissions Committee favorably considers candidates whose academics, life experiences, and extracurricular activities demonstrate some combination of the following:
- An exceptional understanding of and motivation for medicine
- Academic performance in college indicating high aptitude for success in studying medicine
- Strong commitment to the local community
- Unique life experiences that enrich a candidate's understanding of medicine or medically underserved populations
Students nominated for the EIP must meet the following requirements before their application is considered complete. Materials sent by facsimile are not acceptable and will not be considered. Only complete applications will be reviewed.
1. Submission of the Early Identification Program Application Form
Applicants must submit an electronic version of the completed application by the specified deadline. The application forms are available below:
RI Early Identification Program (EIP) Application 2023-24
2. Official transcripts from all institutions of higher education where courses were taken
Transcripts must be sent directly from the Registrar's Office to the Admissions Office or to the premedical advisor. Transcripts sent by the student will not be considered. Separate transcripts are not necessary for courses that are taken as part of a semester abroad or semester-away program as long as the courses and/or credits earned in such courses are reflected on the transcript of the home institution.
3. Three letters of recommendation, at least two from faculty members who have taught the applicant in college
These letters must be sent to the school’s premedical advisor who will then send the letters to the Office of Admissions. Electronic letters are acceptable if sent by email directly from the premedical advisor. Letters submitted by the applicant will not be considered.
4. Recommendation from the premedical advisor
The Early Identification Program application and supporting materials from Rhode Island applicants must be received no later than December 4, 2023. The recommendation of the premedical advisor and the transcripts must reflect grades received by the student through the first four college semesters.
Interviews and Decisions
EIP applicants may be invited to an interview with two members of the MD Admissions Committee. Rhode Island candidates will be interviewed in January. Admissions decisions will be communicated to applicants about a week later.
