Medical School Admissions

Next Steps

Hello, MD Class of 2029!

We are all looking forward to officially welcoming you to The Warren Alpert Medical School this summer! Please read through the requirements and information on this page, and by early June the Office of Student Affairs will reach out to provide you with all the information you'll need about your first-year orientation schedule of events, your academic calendar, how to get your Brown ID, computer requirement, etc.! Please note the following dates/events:

First Day of Class / Orientation

Your mandatory first day of orientation is Monday, August 4 (8:00 am start time!). You will have orientation every day that week, with classes officially starting on Friday. You will be hearing from the Office of Medical Education in early June with more information about your class calendar.

White Coat Ceremony

Your Ceremony of Commitment to Medicine (White Coat Ceremony) is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 13. You will receive more information about this in June.

Requirements from the Admissions Office

Brown Email

See this document for information on how to set up your Brown email account. You will be able to activate your account beginning on Thursday, May 22. Please activate by Friday, May 30, so you don't miss important information from Alpert Medical School; soon we will use only your Brown email (i.e., no other email address) to communicate with you. There is also information on that document for Brown alumni and current Brown students.

Final Transcripts

For your student record, please send an official transcript from every institution you have attended since high school to our Office of Records & Registration (ams-records@brown.edu). This is required of all incoming MD'29 students, even if submitted with your application or as an update via our AMP portal. Coursework taken at Brown University can be accessed internally from our end, so you do not need to send transcripts from Brown. Transcripts from study abroad programs are not necessary, nor are transcripts for college courses you may have taken while still in high school. The official transcript from your primary undergraduate program must show your conferred degree. Transcripts are due by July 1.

We accept electronic transcripts emailed directly from your school to ams-records@brown.edu. We prefer they be emailed to us instead of sent via standard mail. If that is not possible, you may mail yours to the following address:

Office of Records & Registration

Providence, RI 02912

Where Are You?

If you will be traveling this summer, it is important that you update your address and other contact information on the Self-Service Banner website to ensure timely receipt of mailings and other correspondence from Alpert Medical School.

Student Health Insurance + Medical Requirements

Student Health Insurance

It is important that Brown University students have access to comprehensive medical care while enrolled with us. All students are automatically enrolled in the University's Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Participation in SHIP is mandatory unless you are enrolled in another comparable health insurance plan. The effective dates of coverage are July 15, 2025 through August 14, 2026. Each student's account will be charged the $5,367 Health Insurance Fee (assessed entirely in the Fall semester), as well as a Health Services Fee, which covers the cost of basic medical care at Health Services and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). If you choose to waive SHIP, you will need to provide proof of comparable coverage and submit an online waiver form before the bill is due to be paid August 1. The waiver process is managed by Student Health Services. If you waive SHIP, you can still receive treatment at Brown Health Services.

Medical Requirements

Please see this Brown Health Services site, detailing the medical requirements and forms that you need to complete prior to beginning your clinical rotations. You may submit these requirements and forms online via your patient portal; your Brown username and password are the same as those you used to access your secondary application with us. Please note that you cannot access the patient portal until you've activated your Brown email account (see above). The medical requirements submission deadline is June 1, 2025, so make your appointments as soon as possible. (Extension requests: email both ams-records@brown.edu and nursing@health.brown.edu)

Parking + Housing

Parking

There is a parking garage adjacent to the medical school building, and there is a fee associated with it. You may contact the Transportation Office directly with questions and application information. Please note you cannot register your vehicle until you have your Brown ID; that information will be relayed to you in June from the Office of Student Affairs.

There is ample bike storage and shuttle service running to and from the medical school from various locations on campus and the hospitals.

Housing

Many incoming students communicate about housing, roommates, etc. on the MD'29 Facebook page—and by looking at options on the Medical Student Senate's Housing Search spreadsheet, which is linked to from the Facebook page. Here are some additional resources you might find helpful:

Brown Auxiliary Housing (see their Graduate Student section for application information)

River House (currently compiling a waitlist; priority given to incoming1st-year Brown graduate and medical students)

Graduate Student Council (to sign up for their listserv)
