We realize that it is disappointing not to have a final decision on your AMS application. Hopefully this information addresses some of the questions you might have.
General Info
The waitlist is notoriously hard to predict, and it is not ranked. We will be continuously reviewing all candidates (admitted and waitlisted) throughout this process, and we will not forget about you as we continue to assess where we are with the MD Class of 2029.
By April 30, all interviewed candidates who are holding one or more medical school acceptances have to narrow that down to only one school, remaining on as many waitlists as they would like. Brown's policy is that you may remain on our waitlist until the first day our incoming class matriculates, or until such time you select "Commit to Enroll" as your final decision at another medical school. You should promptly decline your seat or waitlist position at any school that you are certain you will not attend, in fairness to other candidates. The AAMC site also has information about this process and the AMCAS Choose Your Medical School tool (i.e., "Plan to Enroll" vs "Commit to Enroll").
Most waitlist movement (offers and rejections) happens around April 30. Since a vacancy could become available at any time up until the first day of class (date TBD, usually very beginning of August), we do not officially close out the entire waitlist until then; however, it would be rare for us to make an offer of admission after July 1. AMS will not extend an offer of admission to a candidate who has already begun his/her program at another medical school.
Updates/Interest/Intent
You may upload any significant updates, letter of interest, letter of intent, or information relating to your application via your account at https://admissions.med.brown.edu. We receive an electronic notification of your upload and take notice; if you can see the document on your “Document Upload” tab, we have received it and can see it too. (You do not need to email us in addition to uploading via the portal.) If you've already met your upload limit, then you may email your update (medschool_admissions@brown.edu) to us. Those emailed directly to us are also added to your file but will not be visible to you via the portal.
Additional LORs
If someone you know would like to write an additional letter of recommendation (LOR) on your behalf, he/she may email a signed PDF version of it to medschool_admissions@brown.edu.
Financial Aid Application
Waitlist offers come with a specific timeframe in which you need to respond to an offer. Therefore, if financial aid will affect your decision to accept or decline an AMS offer, you are urged to file your AMS financial aid application materials even before waitlist decisions are made, so a financial aid package can be prepared for you promptly should you be admitted. Please visit the Office of Financial Aid website for more information.
Applicants to the MD-ScM Primary Care–Population Medicine (PCPM) Program
Decisions for the PCPM program will be made in March, and usually some seats in the PCPM program do become available during the waitlist process.
Campus Visits
The medical school building is a closed campus and therefore not open to non-medical students. If you are interested in visiting Providence on your own, we of course encourage you do that but cannot offer a tour with Admissions or current medical students. There is a lot of information on the Visitor Bureau's website: goprovidence.com.
